First Aid FAQs

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require you to provide adequate and appropriate first-aid equipment, facilities and people so your employees can be given immediate help if they are injured or taken ill at work. What is ‘adequate and appropriate’ will depend on your individual circumstances in your workplace and you should assess what your first-aid needs are (see 1.5).

We at Omni Training Group can visit your premises / provide individuals with advice on what we deem to be ‘adequate and appropriate’ for your specific needs.

The minimum first-aid provision on any work site is:

  • a suitably stocked first-aid box (see 1.2);
  • an appointed person to take charge of first-aid arrangements (see 1.3);
  • information for employees about first-aid arrangements (see 1.7).

It is important to remember that accidents and illness can happen at any time. First-aid provision needs to be available at all times people are at work.

There is no mandatory list of items to be included in any first-aid kit. The decision on what to provide will be based on your findings of your first-aid needs assessment.

As a guide only, where activities involve low hazards, a minimum stock of first-aid items we advise might be:

  • a leaflet giving general guidance on first aid (for example, HSE’s leaflet Basic advice on first aid at work);
  • individually wrapped sterile plasters (assorted sizes), appropriate to the type of work (hypoallergenic plasters can be provided if necessary);
  • sterile eye pads;
  • individually wrapped triangular bandages, preferably sterile;
  • safety pins;
  • large sterile individually wrapped unmedicated wound dressings;
  • medium-sized sterile individually wrapped unmedicated wound dressings;
  • disposable gloves (see HSE’s leaflet Latex and You on selecting latex gloves).

The above is only a suggested contents list.

Employers / Individuals may wish to refer to British Standard BS 8599 which provides further information on the contents of workplace first-aid kits. Whether using a first-aid kit complying with BS 8599 or an alternative kit, the contents should reflect the outcome of your first-aid needs assessment.

Omni Training Group can provide you with all the equipment and signage you may need at very competitive prices.

When an employer’s first-aid needs assessment indicates that a first-aider is unnecessary, the minimum requirement is to appoint a person to take charge of first-aid arrangements. The roles of this appointed person include looking after the first-aid equipment and facilities and calling the emergency services when required. They can also provide emergency cover, within their role and competence, where a first-aider is absent due to unforeseen circumstances (annual leave does not count).

Do appointed persons need to undertake first-aid training?

To fulfil their role, appointed persons do not need first-aid training. However, emergency first-aid training courses are available.

Omni Training Group provide a wide range of First Aid Courses for businesses and individuals; and can create bespoke courses for your own specific needs, if required.

A first-aider is someone who has undertaken training in accordance with the Health & Safety First-Aid Regulations 1981. They must hold a valid certificate of competence in either:

  • First Aid at Work (FAW), or
  • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)

Use the findings of your first-aid needs assessment (see 1.5) to decide whether any first-aiders that are required should be trained in FAW or EFAW.

EFAW training enables a first-aider to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work. FAW training includes EFAW and also equips the first-aider to apply first aid to a range of specific injuries and illness.

It is strongly recommended that your first-aiders undertake annual refresher training in addition to any first aid courses you decide are applicable to your circumstances.

Omni Training Group can assist you in determining the most appropriate course for your needs.

There are no hard and fast rules on exact numbers. It will depend on the circumstances of your workplace. The chart below suggests the number of first-aid personnel to provide under different circumstances.

You should assess your first-aid needs for your particular circumstances. Where there are special circumstances, such as the size of the work premises, density levels of staff, shift work, sites with several buildings, chemicals, high voltage etc; there may be a need to have more first-aid personnel than set out in the chart below.

You may also need more trained staff than the minimum requirement to cover for holidays & absences.

Below is the suggested number of first aid personnel to be available at all times people are at work. The numbers are suggestions only.

REMEMBER – you must have adequate and appropriate first-aid equipment, facilities and people so your employees can be given immediate help if they are injured or taken ill at work

1. From your risk assessment, what degree of hazard is associated with your work activities? 2. How many employees do you have? 3. What first-aid personnel do you need?
Low hazard
IE, offices, shops, libraries
Less than 25

25 – 50

More than 50

At least one appointed person

At least one first aider trained in EFAW.

At least one first aider trained in FAW for every 100

Higher hazard
IE, light engineering and assembly work, food processing, warehousing, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments, construction, chemical manufacture
Less than 5

5 – 50

More than 50

At least one appointed person

At least one first aider trained in EFAW or FAW depending on the type of injuries that might occur.

At least one first aider trained in FAW for every 50 employed (or part thereof)

You have to inform your employees / people who work with you of the first-aid arrangements. Putting up notices telling staff who and where the first-aiders or appointed persons are; and where the first-aid box is will usually be enough. You will need to make special arrangements to give first-aid information to employees with reading or language difficulties.

On 1st October 2009 the Health and Safety Executive made changes to the workplace First Aid provision. There are now two levels of workplace First Aiders, depending on your risk assessment, and the chart shown below will assist in deciding on which course your First Aiders need to attend.

The two courses are as follows, and both are valid for 3 years:

Any further guidance to determine which course is most appropriate for your needs please contact info@omnitraininggroup.co.uk

Please click the Courses Page to see detailed information about the course content and duration.

As you can see from below the courses have a minimum set of hours to be spent on each particular course before accreditation can be achieved.  The fact the content is based in hours allows Omni Training Group to teach in hourly based blocks (minimum of 3hours per block) over an agreed time frame to accommodate your specific needs and achieve the suggested hours set by HSE.

First Aid at Work (FAW) – The training and assessment should be at least 18 hours (not including breaks) over a minimum period of three days.

First Aid at Work requalification (FAW Requal) – The training and assessment should be at least 12 hours, not including breaks, over a minimum period of two days.

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) – The training and assessment should be at least 6 hours, not including breaks.

Emergency First Aid at Work requalification (EFAW Requal) – The training and assessment should be at least 6 hours, not including breaks.

Bespoke / Alternative qualifications – where Omni Training Group design a bespoke course for your specific needs, we will ensure the syllabus contains appropriate content to address the findings of your first-aid needs assessment that is undertaken by Omni Training Group. The content is likely to contain elements common too, or indeed all the topics listed in the syllabus for FAW Course. The duration of training (not including breaks) will be based on comparison of the proposed syllabus content with that for FAW and the time adjusted accordingly. We will inform you of the duration of any bespoke course once we have discussed the content you require.

Omni Training Group understand the constraints individuals & businesses have in committing to a course run over several days.

Using the First Aid at Work (FAW) course as an example; Omni Training Group can provide training in blocks.  These blocks could be 1 day a week over 3 weeks for a 3 Day course or any combination of days up to a maximum of 6 weeks.

Omni Training Group do not recommend that you do any course, which is more than 1 Day in duration, over too long a period.

Omni Training Group will work with you to accommodate your training needs.  As an example, you could do:

  • 3 Day FAW over 3-6 weeks,
  • 2 Day FAW requalification) over 2-4 weeks,
  • 1 Day EFAW over 1-2 weeks,
  • Bespoke courses – duration determined by your specific needs.

Discuss your individual needs with us.

There may be additional costs incurred if you do block training.  Omni Training Group will attempt, where we can, to accommodate you onto a course which is already running and has space, so you incur NO EXTRA CHARGE.

Omni Training Group offer online courses with our partner ProTrainings UK.

This is for some the most cost effective and efficient way to start a course.  For others who like to complete the course with an instructor (in a classroom environment) Omni Training Group can accommodate all of your needs.

Some of the courses are wholly online and you can print your own certificate at the end of the course to show successful completion.  Other courses require an observed assessment as part of the online course, Omni Training Group has assessors/instructors available to assist you complete this observed assessment.

Whichever way you wish to complete your learning Omni Training Group can assist you all the way.

The new regulation changes allow employers greater freedom in choosing a training provider and qualifications to meet their identified first aid needs. Omni Training Group fully endorse this as it offers the customer the choice to choose the best value training for their needs. Employers / Individuals MUST be satisfied that their training provider is competent in first aid and has the necessary quality assurance processes in place. First-aid training is available from a wide range of providers who choose to offer:

  • Regulated qualifications
  • Operate under voluntary accreditation schemes
  • Operate independently of any such accreditation scheme

Due to the exceptional quality and experience of all our instructors, and the quality assurance systems we rigorously uphold; we are able to offer fully Regulated qualifications, operate independently under a voluntary accredited scheme and most importantly certificate our own courses in-house.

Omni Training Group offer regulated courses where the Awarding Organisation (AO) Officially stamps their ‘logo’ onto our certificates for those that require this. There is an additional cost per certificate for those that require a Regulated Certificate. Please discuss this with us and we will give you an unbiased and truthful answer as to whether you need a Regulated Certificate or not.

We do not work on any commission or reward points system for selling you a regulated certificate. Omni Training Group are a family run business with integrity and professionalism – always will be.

Our procedures are fully compliant with the Assessment Principles for First Aid Qualifications. These assessment principles have been produced by Awarding Organisations in cooperation with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

PLEASE ask your chosen First Aid provider:

  • what real-life First Aid experience do they have?
  • How did they become a First Aid provider…through experience in the Emergency Services, Mountain/Sea Rescue or Military; or solely from passing a First Aid Instructor course and then setting up as a business?
  • What is the highest qualification they hold in First Aid? Is it –

First Aid at Work (FAW) – minimum required for teaching First Aid

Ballistic / Enhanced First Aid (D13.1 / D13.2 etc)

Police / Military Medic

Other specialist training – usually reserved for Special Forces / Mountain & Sea Rescue Teams

YOU want someone who has the experience and skills to back up what they are about to teach you.

It’s your money…but it’s someone’s life.

Please email us using the CONTACT US box and include:

  • what course you would like
  • preferred day(s)
  • how many people

We will then contact you to ensure you have the right course for your requirements and make arangements for a start time, and venue location (either at our venues or at your premises).  Most of our customers only require the 1Day EFAW Course and not the 3Day FAW course…we will tell you this, if it is applicable, and not waste your time or money if we feel it is not needed for your business or role.

Omni Training Group does not have a dedicated single-location training centre.

Omni Training Group predominantly covers London, all the Home Counties; but we will travel further afield such is the demand for our training. Covering such a vast area makes it logistically easier if our instructors travel to you than have your employees travelling to our premises. Most importantly it allows Omni Training Group to offer a competitive pricing structure.

Most (if not all) clients have space which is suitable for training purposes, for those that do not have the space we can locate suitable premises for you which would be convenient for your employees; or you may utilise our growing number of venues for those that do not have space at their premises. Please visit our Venue Page.

There may be additional costs involved in travelling outside of London/Home Counties but we will ensure these are kept to a minimum.  If there is an additional cost to be incurred we will inform you of this prior to any course booking.

PLEASE NOTE: we may need the minimum GROUP BOOKING number of students (which is 4 or more) to make the course viable.

AREAS COVERED: London, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex and Kent.

We only offer preferential rates to those that have suitable premises to run the course or are contracted to us for their training

Omni Training Group do not inflate our prices and then give you what looks like a decent discount. That is not being honest or transparent.

Omni Training Group provide you with a decent, competitive price straightaway – check out our competitors’ prices first and then come back to us to book a course! If they do not display their prices on their website ask them why…..to obtain your email address and details?

Take into consideration the experience and skill level of your tutor.  ANYONE can become a First Aid Instructor and start a business – but only a few have the credentials to provide you with a genuine experienced-backed training course.

At Omni Training Group you get training which is second to none. You may one day be called upon to save the life of a loved one – that is when quality training comes into its own.

For clients that contract their First Aid training to Omni Training Group on an on-going basis (minimum numbers of learners and contractual time may apply), then we will do our best to reward your faith in our company and give you the best value for money in the industry.

You MUST bring photo ID with you (passport / driving licence / emergency services or other appropriate form of identification).

We advise you to wear comfortable clothing – as dependant on your course you may be physically placed into various positions on the floor by your training partner who may be of the opposite sex.  Please do not wear clothing which may cause offence to others.

The final decision as to whether your clothing is suitable rests with the instructor.  Their decision is final and you will be asked to leave if clothing is not suitable.

Bring a packed lunch with you – firstly it is healthier and not all locations have access to eateries.

ANY concerns regarding what type of ID is suitable, what clothing to wear, working with a person of the opposite sex etc please contact info@omnitraininggroup.co.uk

Unless they are taking part in the course then unfortunately no you cannot bring them along to watch.  It is essential you are 100% focused on your training.

This is not a ‘turn up and pass’ course. Omni Training Group Instructors pass you on the understanding that they are happy you could deliver effective First Aid to them if they needed it!

Yes.  You will receive a 15minute break and a 30minute break. This can be flexible and adjusted by your experienced instructor, based on the classes learning requirements; and extra breaks accommodated if necessary.

Those who have religious, dietary, or any other special considerations Omni Training Group will be accommodating to the best of our ability.

Please contact Parmjit or Amanda beforehand or let us know via the CONTACT FORM so we can make the necessary arrangements and inform our instructor(s) for the day.  We may not be able to accommodate you on the day if you have not discussed your requirements with us beforehand.

To gain your certificate you will need to show a good understanding of the subject matter that is being taught.  The trainer will assess your physical skills (and where applicable any questionnaires that may be required to be completed) but rest assured this will be assessed as a group and not individually.

YOU WILL NOT BE EXPECTED TO DEMONSTRATE IN FRONT OF THE CLASS.

You will be clearly informed about the start and finish times of your course in your joining instructions.

The start time is non-negotiable and if you are late and the class has started then you will be turned away and you will have to rebook another course.  NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN in line with our Cancellation Policy below.

Our courses are in great demand due to the expertise and experience of our instructors.  Please do not deprive another person of a course space.

Omni Training Group appreciate things happen in life which are unexpected and disrupt our day-to-day life.  Therefore, we have a cancellation policy which we believe is as straightforward as we can make it.

7 days – 48 hours = 50% money back

Less than 48 hours = No refund.

The cut-off period will commence from the date and time YOU send us an email or text and NOT when we reply back to you confirming acceptance – as is the case with many companies. As this is a very generous cancellation policy; please ensure you send all communication re cancellations / non-attendance strictly before the cut-off periods as shown above.

In very rare circumstances, Omni Training Group may have to cancel your training for reasons beyond our control.  If this is the case then Omni Training Group will offer you a choice of a 100% refund or reschedule you at the earliest opportunity at the same or nearby venue.  If we are unable to facilitate this for whatever reason, then a 100% refund will be provided.  Omni Training Group will not compensate you for any additional costs you may incur.

We will visit your premises, discuss your requirements and make suggestions accordingly.  We do not sell you anything that is not required – Omni Training Group is a family run business which has no quotas or incentive to sell you something that is not needed.

We do charge for the Yearly Assessment which is based on your premises size, as an example a small business would entail a cost starting from £99+VAT (unless you have a contract with us to provide on-going First Aid Training for your staff – in which case the yearly assessment will be provided at NO EXTRA CHARGE to you).

We can also supply equipment for specific First Aid needs IE, personal first aid kits, catering industry kits, vehicles kits, kits for travelling abroad, school trip kits, child care, PE kits, outdoor trip kits, acid kits, bum bag kits; the specific kits we have available is endless.  If we cannot supply you a ready-made kit we will make a bespoke first aid kit just for you using our expertise. Omni Training Group Instructors have carried Medic Kits, Ballistic Kits and Public Order First Aid Kits in their roles and added extra equipment they needed from front-line operational work experience.  A full discussion will take place explaining the items in each kit supplied by us.

Please contact as with your requirements as we may already be or can be accredited to deliver many courses which we physically are unable to display on our website.

Those unable to meet the criteria cannot become an Omni Training Group Instructor.

Omni Training Group instructors are trained to the highest standard, EVERY instructor is checked to ensure:

  • they have the current teaching qualifications,
  • current First Aid qualifications,
  • maintain their own Continual Professional Development (CPD) to prevent stagnation of their skills,

and they

  • MUST partake in an internal company assessment from qualified assessors to ensure their training is maintained to the high standards expected of Omni Training Group Instructors, this is done at random and unannounced.

The majority of our instructors come from Firearms/Public Order backgrounds and are trained to Ballistic – Medic standard level of First Aid.  They know stuff that works in real life.

We will provide you the best training for when you need it the most – make sure you know who is training you.

Omni Protection FAQs (coming in 2023)

Work related violence and aggression is defined as ‘any incident in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work’ and can and does occur in all walks of life.
If you work in a role which involves working with children and/or vulnerable adults then you need to be fully conversant in your legal obligations when dealing with this section of our community and may wish to undertake a more legislative based course from Omni Training Group.

This can include (and is not exhaustive):
Care Workers
Doctors
Medical Professionals (NHS etc)
Social Workers
Mental Health Workers
Managers
Volunteers
Teachers & Support Staff

If you work in a role which may present the potential for conflict, aggression or violence; and may include those that travel, work in the community, work with clients that may pose a risk, or the job that itself creates potential conflict; then you may wish to consider a more practical based course from Omni Training Group.

This can include (and again is not exhaustive):
Front of House / Hospitality
Retail workers
Probation Officers
Mental Health Workers
Community Workers
Sales Representatives
Parking Attendants
Teacher & Support Staff
Medical Professionals (NHS, etc)
Security Industry Staff
You may find that you can see your role falling into both categories, this is usually the case.

We as an ethical and honest company would say that if you work with children and or vulnerable adults then your priority would be to take the more legislative based courses (Safeguarding etc,); and then consider a more practical based course (Breakaway Techniques etc,). It is not always necessary to undertake both courses – however if you do wish to undertake both courses Omni Training Group will be able to deliver this by experienced Instructors.

If you are still unsure about which course to take then please contact Omni Training Group via the Contact Form or directly via email at info@omnitraininggroup.co.uk
All instructors are Emergency Services (Self-Defence) Instructors, with many years experience on the streets.

The practical knowledge & skills our instructors have is enviably viewed; we teach you the same way we teach the Emergency Services.  We teach you techniques which work and anyone can use to reduce the risk of harm to oneself.
If you require advice on any additional training then we have a family run Martial Arts Club which you may be interested in with classes in Loughton, Chelmsford and Woodford. Visit www.omni-martialarts.co.uk or call 07977 132 111 and ask for Sifu Kuldip Rai.

All our accreditations have been obtained from external Recognised Awarding Organisations and this training is backed up with personal stories and practical experience.

All Omni Training Group Instructors are Enhanced DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) checked for your protection and reassurance.

Please contact as with your requirements as we may already be or can be accredited to deliver many courses which we physically are unable to display on our website.
